Durable Labels Designed for Extreme Conditions

We worked closely with their team to provide a 3”x1” label specifically designed to adhere to plastic freezer racks for long-term storage. The selection of material was critical, as standard paper labels were not an option due to adhesive failure, smudging, and lack of durability in extreme cold. Instead, Computype’s labels were engineered to withstand ultra-low temperatures, including liquid nitrogen storage at -196°C.

The label’s construction includes a bright white gloss polypropylene facestock, top-coated for superior flexographic and thermal transfer printability. The adhesive is specifically designed to bond permanently to plastic and glass, ensuring adhesion even in cryogenic processes involving liquid nitrogen. These labels are capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -196°C to +90°C and are resistant to dry ice (-80°C), steam autoclaving, and gamma radiation.

This customer initially requested what they referred to as a “bulletproof label” after testing samples and validating the solution for their needs. Its durability in cryogenic storage ensures that readability and adhesion are maintained, even through multiple freeze-thaw cycles. Our process allows labs to validate labeling solutions before implementation, ensuring they meet performance requirements. The transition was seamless, led by lab managers, and completed within two to three weeks — a quick turnaround made possible by our established relationship with the company.

Since switching to our cryogenic labels, the company has had no reported issues with labels falling off their racks. Their freezers are now well organized, with every sample easily identifiable and retrievable.
